There is another addition in Huawei’s mate range of Smartphones “Huawei Mate 9” and its alternative “Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Design”. For most users bigger means better, and big is exactly what Huawei has manufactured, this as Huawei claims is its Best big-Screen Android Smartphone. Lets check out what lies under the hood..
Huawei Mate 9: Design
Huawei’s Mate 9 packs a 5.9 inch screen, the biggest concern when designing a large Smartphone is providing the users with a ‘big-screen experience’ and making it glamorous enough to be carried around easily for every day use. It looks like Huawei has done a pretty god job. Measuring 78.9 mm wide, 7.9 mm deep and 156.9 mm tall, it feels comfortable and surprisingly light to hold. Mate 9 has a full metal body with elegantly curved corners and back.
A circular fingerprint scanner lies below a dual LEICA Camera in vertical orientation on the back side. A power button and volume rocker lie on the right side, a hybrid dual SIM tray lies on the left edge. At the bottom you get the Speaker grille and the USB type-C port. You also get an Infrared transceiver along with the headphone jack on the top edge. The front side look pretty clean accompanied with narrow bezels. There are a number of colors available including a beautiful shade of gold, pink, black and combinations of silver and white.
Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Design
The Porsche design of Huawei Mate has a more attractive appeal to it, it comes with a smaller 5.5 inch screen (dimensions: 152 x 75 x 7.5 mm) than the 5.9 inch on the normal Mate 9. Its got dual curved screen with the fingerprint scanner moved to the front below the display, kind of reminds you of Galaxy S7 edge. The back is completely black, covered with anodized metal that looks magnificent under sunlight. Because it is super expensive most consumers are going to prefer the normal Mate 9.
Coming to the display Huawei Mate 9 supports a full HD display with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels, whereas the Porsche comes with a QHD display with a higher resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels. We would have expected Mate 9 to have a high resolution and maybe support a Quad HD panel assuming that its a larger display, but as you can see that’s not the case. However its display is still fantastic with greater screen brightness as compared to Porsche (600 nits) and the viewing angels are also superb. Even though in comparison Porsche has better color accuracy but that does not mean that it is better than Mate 9. In fact in many situations you might prefer Mate 9 over the Porsche Design.
Huawei mate 9 comes powered with a 2.5 GHz Octa-Core Kirin 960 chipset and Huawei mate 9 Porsche with the 1.8 GHz Octa-Core Kirin 960 chipset. Mate 9 stocks 4 GB of RAM with 64 GB internal storage and Porsche stocks 6 GB of RAM with 256 GB internal storage. Both have considerable amount of power under the hood, graphic intensive gaming, multitasking, loading apps, browsing the web, multi tabbed browsing all work out perfectly. They are also packed with Huawei’s Machine learning Algorithm, which learns your habits and keeps track of your favorite apps and resources. This further makes the performance more snappier and it remains so even after months of usage.
Both handsets come with a 4000 mAh battery, so you get considerable amount of battery life as well. These are Huawei’s first handsets to be equipped with ‘Huawei Supercharge’, that means you can charge your handset more quicker within about 90 minutes max. The fingerprint sensors on both the phones are snappy and come with gestures like ‘tap once’ to go back or ‘tap and hold’ to return to home screen. With the Porsche handset the fingerprint scanner is placed at the front, so you can turn off the navigation keys and use gestures on the fingerprint sensor for navigation.
Now lets talk about the cameras. Huawei has partnered with LEICA and both its handsets Mate 9 and Mate 9 Porsche come with dual LEICA cameras on the back. Mate 9 has a high resolution 20 Megapixels Black and white camera and 12 Megapixels color cam. With this combination we expect to extract a ton of detail even in low light situations. But that’s not exactly the case, the images seem slightly washed of and the colors aren’t as punchy and saturated. However the overall picture quality is more on the realistic scale, the colors seem more realistic than vibrant. In daylight you can take in some extra details with accurate colors. The 8 Megapixels front camera is just as good as its competition, but its not the best.
Porsche Mate 9 also contains a 20 MP monochrome sensor and a 12 MP RGB sensor, it has the same results as those from the regular Mate 9; Good, but not as accurate and detailed as the results from iPhone 7 or Samsung Galaxy S7. But we cant just nullify the camera just in comparison, obviously its overall results are pretty good. And both the handsets come with some great modes like the Bokeh mode and the Pro mode which offer some excellent shots.
If your looking for a Smartphone that looks stunning, offers snappy performance and is packed with a phenomenal battery. Then you have found your Smartphone. However if you love photography and prefer smaller a handset than you should check out some other Mobile phones in the market. If money is no issue for you, then we recommend getting Porsche Mate 9, it looks stunning and packs just as much power as the regular Mate 9.
